Your Spring Maintenance Checklist

Your Spring Maintenance Checklist

One of the best parts about spring time in Manitoba is seeing who is first to bust out their summer shorts while temps are still below freezing. With the extreme temperatures and the heavy amount of snow we receive in Manitoba, spring home maintenance is the most important of all four seasons. Keeping up with regular maintenance on your home can keep your home in prime working condition, help mitigate potential damage or risk of a potential insurance claim, prevent breakdowns in your home's mechanical systems, save money long term and keep your home looking its best.

Here's a list of recommended maintenance items you should consider completing from March - June:

▢ Consider shovelling the snow 3-4 feet away from your foundation to help avoid basement seepage during spring melt

▢ Put down your downspouts and ensure they are at least 6-8 feet away from your homes foundation

▢ Ensure your sump pump is fully functional

▢ Attached your sump pump house and extend to edge of property when temperatures remain above freezing

▢ Remove debris from gutters/downspouts and clean up dead branches

▢ Clean window and door screens, and power-wash windows, siding and stucco

▢ Check faucets and flapper in your toilet tanks

▢ Check your pipes for any signs of leaks or potential leaks

▢ Sweep, clean and refinish the deck if needed

▢ Check roof for missing or loose shingles

▢ Address any low-hanging, shifted or damaged eavestroughs

▢ Clean or replace furnace filter to remove dust build-ups

▢ Clean or replace HRV system filters

▢ Reseed lawn, filling in bald patches before summer heat and consider fertilizer treatment if necessary

▢ Rinse off/clean air conditioning unit fins with garden hose or have AC unit serviced

▢ Vacuum lint from dryer vents

If any recommended home repairs and maintenance go beyond your skill level or lead to more complicated projects, consider hiring a professional to help. We have great connections in the trades, and would be happy to put you in touch with someone who can assist you if need be.

Keeping up with these small tasks now could save you thousands of dollars long term, and keep your home show ready should you be in a position where you need to sell on shorter notice.
